Trials and Tribulations

for Solo Percussion

About

TRIALS AND TRIBULATIONS was commissioned by Victor Pablo Garcia-Gaetán to explore the timbral possibilities available in the various small odds and ends of the percussionist’s toolkit, typically called “toys”. Among these instruments are the triangle, vibraslap, flexatone, and bell tree, to which I also added three cymbals, muted to remove nearly all resonance. This work examines the ways in which these small objects, often used for sound effects, can combine to create various timbres and interesting textures. The title of the piece is a play of words. The work is a trial in the sense that it is seeking new sounds and experimenting to find new timbres from instruments common to our ear. Tribulations refers to the sense of suffering or decay created in the piece by the decreasing resonance over the course of the work.

Instrumentation: Vibraslap, Flexatone, 3 Cymbals (low, medium, high), Bell Tree, 3 Triangles (graduated in size) and Prayer Bowl

Duration: ca. 3’40”
